Anthony Templet killed his Dad. He admits it and never denies it. He even calls 911 to report the gruesome deed.

Why Do I Watch True Crime Stories

At the tail end of finishing my Paper Girls post I decided to call it night and finish the flourishing tomorrow morning.

I open up the Netflix App because I just remembered that there is a new season of the anime Kakegurui / Kakegurui Twin however the streaming app decided it wanted me to watch something else. but I’m matched up with the Netflix documentary series I Just Killed My Dad.

Awful but perfect. I hate that I love such a grim, morbid, and unfortunate genre. The fact that it is even a genre is disturbing.

The honest truth is that I adore paranormal stories. Yes, stupid ghost stories that no one believes. They’re interesting even if they’re repetitive, but that content is hard to find. It makes sense that it is hard to find because if there are so many ghost stories they can’t all be valid.

So, since my preferred genre is lacking I fell into True Crime. Yes, I do have my favorite True Crime YouTubers which are Stephanie Harlowe and Kendall Rae. Kendall Rae’s husband has a channel called Lights Out that I love too.

Now, let’s discuss episode one of three of the limited series I Just Killed My Dad.

I Just Killed My Dad
A gripping true-crime documentary series from Skye Borgman, director of the award-winning “Abducted in Plain Sight.”

This is a limited docuseries that is composed of 3 episodes. Each episode averages a run time of 40 minutes (127 minutes total). The show was released on August 9, 2022 via Netflix.

We are introduced to Anthony Joseph Templet who just murdered Burt Templet.

I have never heard about this case so I am going in completely  blind.

Anthony Joseph Templet is the son of Burt Templet. He is the only person that knows exactly what happened that night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana which makes it difficult because he is the murderer.

The police department comment on the demeanor of Anthony Templet. He was flat, removed from all emotions. Flat, calm, and without remorse.

They flash back to Anthony Templet, he vocalizes what he believed was going to happen upon the arrival of the police.

He believed they were going to cuff him for just a moment and he would be released.
He believes he did absolutely nothing wrong.

Maybe because he is young he doesn’t understand that even if someone has done something wrong to you that you may consider self defense there is still protocol…

Especially if it involves murdering your father.

In his mind he did nothing wrong and should be let back into his home… To do what? Clean up the blood? Play Xbox?

Not sure as to what he thought should be the next steps.

The whole altercation was due to a cellphone.

Anthony mentions how his Dad doesn’t like secrets.

Burt Templet grabs Anthony Templet’s phone to see who he is communicating with and believes it to be the step mom (They had just recently separated). The dad becomes physically abusive. Anthony Templet locks himself in a room and his Dad beats the door down and that is when he came face to face with the previously hidden revolver that is now present in Anthony’s hands.

Here’s the flipside of the story.

Although Anthony Templet states that him and his dad got into a physical altercation the police officers that are interrogating him say he has no physical evidence that support his claims.

There are no visible bruises nor scratches on him to signify that a fight ever happened. Also the crime scene was clean minus the bloodbath from the shooting. The furniture is in place and not even a dish is out of place.

The family has mixed feelings about the father, Burt Templet.

Peyton, the step-son said they weren’t allowed to joke and kept to themselves.
Yet, the step uncle says that Anthony was treated like a king.

Burt’s best friend didn’t even know what he did for a living but the step mom knew and she made sure to state that he was an excellent provider.

Here are some Keynotes I took while watching this first episode –

  • Anthony doesn’t know his actual birthday and doesn’t know his address. He is 17 years old
  • He had a state of the art surveillance camera system that he would use to watch Anthony
  • He doesn’t know anything about his family, didn’t know anything about current affairs, Burt answered everything during the interview process of getting hired at a greenhouse
  • Where’s Anthony’s mom?
  • Burt Templet has a list of assault charges
  • AJ is a missing child taken from his home by his father? Wait…

Bombshell moment

AJ is his actual nickname. AJ, Anthony Templet is a missing child.

Towards the end of episode 1 it starts peeling away as to who these people are. Who is Anthony Templet? Who is Burt Templet.

The story is starting to shape up like a recent Netflix documentary series titled The Girl In The Picture.

I actually did try to write about The Girl In The Picture, but it was difficult as I kept thinking there was more to the story even beyond what was disclosed. I wanted to rewatch it to see if I missed anything but ultimately decided the case was tragic, sad, but will skip on writing about.

So why write about this?

The title is an attention grabber!
The first thing anyone or at least my first thought is well why did you kill your dad? Are you in jail? Why are you in a documentary? You have to watch it!
