Now, if you’ve watched the trailer and want to know more about this upcoming film, here’s the sexy synopsis for you plus my thoughts on the documentary.

Discover the wonders of the cosmos through the lens of NASA’s Webb Telescope in IMAX®’s Deep Sky. Directed by Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn and narrated by Oscar®-nominated actress Michelle Williams, this awe-inspiring journey takes audiences to the very dawn of time and space, unveiling never-before-seen cosmic vistas and newly unearthed exoplanets orbiting distant stars.

Follow the gripping global endeavor to construct and deploy the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), poised a million miles from Earth, as humanity strives to unravel the mysteries that have tantalized us for eons: our origins, the birth of the universe, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Immerse yourself in the vast beauty on a giant IMAX screen near you.

Now Here’s the Basic Synopsis

  • You’ll learn about the James Webb Space Telescope and get a brief comparison of the JWST to the Galileo Telescope.
  • You’ll get dazzling cosmic imagery.
  • Sentimental moments with Scientists.
  • Basic questions of life – Are we the only ones out here on a floating rock?

That sounds exciting, right? Especially when you find out the film clocks in just shy of 40 minutes at 39 minutes and 56 seconds. Perfect. I’m always open to a quick ride of wonder.

I had to watch Deep Sky twice.

The first viewing left me perplexed. I swear I was following along, but besides thinking wow the few bits of space they share with us are cool, however I really had no clue as to what they are talking about. As a Space enthusiast, I felt miffed as the film came to a close.

If a ship of aliens came across this object floating in space, what would they think? From the big mirror they might guess it was a telescope, built by a curious species for taking pictures of the universe. But they couldn’t know that it took 10,000 people from 14 countries and 20 years to build it. Or that it was designed to look for the beginning of time and space. Until it started looking for them.

Well, let’s give it another whirl.

The second viewing of Deep Sky was absolutely delightful as I was no longer held back by my lack of comprehension. I now understand why the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is amazing and why these moments were so emotional for the featured scientists.

I was thrilled when the Cosmic Cliffs splashed on the screen and I was able to say “Oh, Wow! It’s dust, gas, and stars!” and then the scientist confirmed my answer I was beaming with pride.

The scientists believe there are other life forms beyond Earth and I wouldn’t be surprised because there’s no way we are the only ones spinning on a rock sphere.

I enjoyed Deep Sky because I am a Space Enthusiast.

That’s it.

This is not the film for the person who loves spoon-fed Netflix documentaries or the average movie goer looking for a bit of thrill, because even with Michelle Williams beautiful narration, it is going to go over most people’s heads. I expected the film to be easier to grasp since they’re opening it to the public.

Then of course there’s another problem… Once you understand the film you realize that the documentary isn’t that deep, but instead shallow pools of googleable information.

Lastly, for this to be an IMAX Original I’m expecting an immersive cosmic experience and we didn’t get that all.

Overall, I do like this documentary. Yet, if they made the film longer, gave us more space footage, and made it so that the regular dude gets it and I would love it.

Are you planning to see Deep Sky this weekend or hoping the documentary finds its way on a streaming platform for you to view?

I enjoyed Deep Sky, but I would have enjoyed it more if it was longer, more in depth, and gave us more video footage of space. The film is interesting, but falls a bit short for those that are genuinely interested in space exploration.
